It has been 11 years since I was diagnosed with ITP, an autoimmune disorder. Over the years, I’ve grown to become more resilient and optimistic. However, those initial years were undeniably tough. Especially during the early days, after undergoing numerous tests and procedures, it was disheartening to hear that autoimmune disorders had no cure. Accepting this reality was challenging, and I often wish someone had provided me with a more thorough explanation and offered words of hope, assuring me that while autoimmune disorders may not have a cure, they can indeed be effectively managed.
Today, I am writing this letter with the hope that it may offer solace and strength to someone who has recently been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. My wish is that these words inspire resilience and instil a sense of hope as they navigate the challenges that lie ahead.
Letter to an Autoimmune Warrior
Dear Beautiful Soul,
I want you to know that you are not alone in this journey. Being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder can feel like an overwhelming and uncertain path, but there is strength within you that you may not even realize yet. I’m writing this letter to offer you comfort, support, and a few words of encouragement.
First and foremost, please understand that your feelings of fear, frustration, and uncertainty are completely valid. It’s natural to have moments of doubt and worry about the future when faced with a condition that is labelled as “incurable.” But remember, being “incurable” doesn’t mean being “untreatable” or “unmanageable.” There are many ways to manage autoimmune disorders and lead a fulfilling life.
You are stronger than you think. Living with an autoimmune disorder can be a daily battle, but every day you wake up and face it head-on is a testament to your resilience. You are a warrior, and warriors keep fighting, no matter how tough the battlefield may be.

Find a support network. Whether it’s friends, family, or online communities, connecting with others who understand what you’re going through can be incredibly comforting. Sharing your experiences and listening to others can provide emotional strength and valuable insights.
Advocate for yourself. You are your own best advocate in managing your condition. Learn as much as you can about your autoimmune disorder, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to seek second opinions or explore different treatment options if needed.
Practice self-care. Your body is going through a lot, so it’s important to prioritize self-care. This includes not only physical care but also mental and emotional well-being. Remember to rest when you need it, eat well, and engage in activities that bring you joy.

Stay positive. While there may not be a cure, there are treatments and therapies that can help you live a fulfilling life. Focus on the possibilities and the things you can still achieve and enjoy.
Lastly, always remember that your worth is not defined by your health condition. You are so much more than your autoimmune disorder. You have dreams, passions, and a unique journey ahead of you. Embrace it, and never lose sight of the incredible person you are.
You are not alone, and you are loved and supported by many, including me. Keep fighting, keep believing, and keep living your life to the fullest. You’ve got this.
With unwavering support and understanding,
Another autoimmune warrior 🙂
